Ready to be inspired? - becoming a mentor

Mentors for the Crossing Thresholds programme often tell us how energising and inspiring they find working with participants. We recently welcomed 22 would-be mentors to the first in a new series of events for those considering mentoring to help them get started.

Together we looked at why mentoring is such an important part of the programme, the characteristics valuable in all mentors, and the unique qualities held by each and every one of those attending. We discussed how mentoring is a supportive, two-way relationship in which the mentor listens actively and facilitates decision-making for the mentee - in a non-judgemental, empathetic way. Each new mentor left the session with an idea of their own personal style and values, and some great tips on how to get started.

The enthusiasm and commitment of the group was so positive - and we would love others considering mentoring to come to our next event on Monday 13 September (take a look at the website events page).

Many thanks to mentors past, present and future from Liza Berresford and Kate Sturdy.

Using the C-word with care

Do you ever use the C-word? Do you have people using it on you? I’m talking about Confidence of course. If we show humility or hesitation, doubt or deference then someone usually pops up to say “you should be more confident.” I imagine they think they’re being helpful.
